Last Saturday was make or break time in the L.G.F.A. Galway County league final between St. James’ and St. Gabriel’s. The Division 3 U-12 league final was played in Claregalway and was an exciting encounter. Both teams put on an exhibition of football and the standard of skills on display was exceptional. In addition, the future is bright for the St. James’ club based on their display in this epic tie. Their direct free flowing style and superior teamwork carried the day. James’ took the lead early on and moved the ball at a quick pace. Jasmine Greaney opened the scoring, which was quickly added by scores from Leah O’Connor, Deirbhile Melody and Rola Olusola. The Jimmies were aided in the opening half with a strong breeze but it must be noted that there was some pre-match nerves and the girls in green and maroon kicked a lot of wides in the first period of the game. At one stage in the first half James’ were five points ahead and were cruising to say the least. Their lead was short lived as the girls from Aughrim added a tally of scores which put them in the lead. Nevertheless, James’ regrouped and leveled the game before halftime. In the second half St. Gabriel’s took the lead and scored some excellent points and goals. James’ were trailing in the second half and were five points down with only 15 minutes remaining on the clock. It looked as if St. Gabriel’s were going to win the game. James’ did not give up and battled hard in all positions on the field. The jimmies started the comeback in the last quarter of the game and an excellent goal from Ciara Byrne stunned the Gabriel’s team and management. Momentum had sung in favor of the James’ girls and they scored another fantastic goal. This time it was Chloe Folan who rattled the back of the net. Rola Olusola and Deirbhile Melody added additional scores to secure the win. Gabriel’s managed to score a goal in the final minute of the game but it was too late. Referee John Devlin blew the full minute whistle and it was James’ who emerged winners. This is the first time in the clubs history that James’ have won an underage title. On the day James’ had many stars and in goals was Chloe Kelly who performed extremely well. In defense was Sarah Hosty, Izzy Mulryan, Aoife Joyce, Leanne Regan, Joyce Achieng and Shauna Byrne. They all had excellent games and gave it their all. In the middle of the park were Rola Olusola and Leah O’Connor. These girls delivered some excellent balls to the forward line and worked very hard in midfield. Up front was Eva Woods, Jasmine Greaney, Deirbhile Melody, Ciara Byrne, Chloe Folan and Elena Kenny. All of these players performed well and battled hard for possession. Among the Substitute’s were Chloe Corcoran, Leah Curran, Yvonne Creaven, Laoise Concannon, Aishling Glynn, Jemma Higgins, Anna Keady, Anna King, Brook Madden. All of these contributed to the team all season and played a key role in the games building up to the final. The St. James’ club would like to congratulate the Jimmies on this super victory and wish the team and management (Tanya Byrne, Sue Kenny, Una Kirton, Irene Murphy and Aoife Concannon)the best of luck in the championship this summer.
