Galway Junior ‘A’ Championship Round 1 by David Henry
St. James’ 7-21
Spiddal 2-7
Last Saturday was make or break time in the Galway Junior A football Championship and Pat Gordan’s side overcame Spiddal in perfect weather conditions in Moycullen G.A.A. grounds. The Jimmies opened the match from start to finish on top. Even without the experience of Mark Kelly, James’ had the strength, depth and determination to win. The St James’ line up consisted of goalkeeper Nigel Walsh. Captain Patrick O’Connor led at the back and his defense prevented the opposition from scoring for long duration’s of the game. Mark Cullinane, Peter Healy, Shane Gillespie, Donal Seoighe and Rob Wynne were excellent in defense and cut off a lot of attacks created by Spiddal. The midfield line consisted of John Byrne and Josh McFarlene and both players fielded some excellent balls throughout the course of the game. Alan Hanley led the attack at centre forward alongside Lee Vahey and Cillian Breathnach. Some excellent team plays resulted with many scores. Lee Vahey and Alan Hanley in particular had exceptional games and added a tally of scores. The team worked extremely hard from the get go and displayed an exhibition of accurate kick passing and scoring. It was Ryan Doherty, Keith Gordon and Sean Boyle in the full forward and all contributed to the scoreboard. Ryan Doherty scored 2-4 from play and this put James’ in a strong position at half time. The second half witnessed Spiddal fight back and this put James’ under pressure but Gordon’s side pulled together as a unit and were physically and mentally stronger overall. The substitutes also made an impact in the game with Keith Murphy, Austin Lacey, Paul McCarthy all raising white flags. Key players for James’ was Nigel walsh, Patrick O’Connor, Rob Wynne, Mark Cullinane, Shane Gillespie, Lee Vahey, Alan Hanley, Ryan Doherty and Cillian Breathnach. The team work rate from everyone was second to none and James’ emerged winners from this tie. St James would like to thank all that went to Moycullen on Saturday for their support and also would like to congratulate the team and management staff.
