The word ‘amalgamation’ in the GAA is often treated with disdain. The thought of two rival clubs joining forces can stir resentments within and open old wounds. There is a fear of losing a sense of identity. It is rarely seen as an opportunity to create something better, something stronger.
In these difficult times GAA clubs throughout the country are eager to find ways to assist local communities. St James’ on the east side of Galway city are adopting different methods to assist members and general public in their area.
Given the growth of St James’ GAA club, it would not be a surprise to see it challenging for senior championship honours in the not-too-distant future. However, until that point arrives, its juvenile director, David Henry, says the development of its young players remains the priority.
As a St James’ juvenile coaches meeting drew to a close at the start of the month, and attention switched to the upcoming John West Féile na nGael, Con O’Donovan turned to Alfie Howley recalling some heated battles in the fabled competition between Mervue and Renmore.
